The instructors are trained to first explain and demonstrate the action a student is asked to perform. In practice, each student works on a sheet of paper or canvas, while the teacher does a separate, smaller piece in the same medium, where the student can see each step-by-step technique the instructor is asking them to perform. The instructor and students work are always separate, guaranteeing the students work is ultimately their own.

Tom Violand - Creative Director, CEO PDF Print E-mail

Attending the number one rated design program with a publically funded University (per US News & World Report), Tom traveled to Chicago, New York, and Charleston, WV as a paid intern engaged in graphic design and industrial design for Sears, Henry Dreyfuss Associates, and Public Television. He ultimately graduated with a Bachelors of Science degree in Design from the University of Cincinnati.

Moving to California in September 1983, Tom began work as an automotive interior designer for BMW DesignWorks in Newbury Park. Promoted to project manager, he traveled to Munich and Toronto on automotive seat styling assignments for BMW and General Motors.

Indulging his love of graphic design, Tom actively sought outside work doing company logos, brochures and ads. In 1989 Tom started Image & Form to continue desiging both two and three dimensional work using the latest design tool of that era, the Macintosh computer. In the past 18 years Tom has built a successful business with clients as diverse as General Motors, Catalina Yachts and ElectraCraft powerboats. Tom has won several local and national awards for his tradeshow designs and illustration. The past 5 years has seen a distillation of activity to freelance photography, graphic design and illustration for a select group of local clients.

For Tom, owning and directing Art is Our Passion represents the attainment of not only a life-long goal to teach in a class setting, but the joy of sharing the knowledge he has gained with others just discovering their creative identity.

“I believe that drawing and painting are the absolute basis of all design. Having a working understanding of color, shape and line, with the hands-on command of skills using the basic tools of paintbrush and pencil, is the best foundation possible for personal satisfaction and enrichment, or building a career in any professional design field.”

Tom lives with his wife Gail and daughter Megan in Moorpark. Favorite pursuits outside art include marine photography and sailing.
